The Long Island Antique Bottle Association is a group of collectors of antique bottles. Founded over 30 years ago in 1971, our hobby is the preservation of these fragile items, and also the sharing and gathering of knowledge about them.
These antique bottles date back to an era when milk was delivered in glass bottles to your door, you did not get it at the store. When beer and soda were bottled at the local hotel, tavern or saloon and delivered by horse and wagon, not by trailer truck from a distant city. To promote their business, the merchants would have their names embossed on the bottles, and with the passage of time, these bottles have become collectors items. Why in just Sayville alone, there were around 12 dairy farms that used glass bottles, 3 business's that bottled beer for home delivery, and two drug stores to fill your prescriptions. There was even a company which produced First Aid kits for those times when you could not get to a doctor. The Indispensable Kit Company! And remember, this is just in one community.
We would like to invite any one with an interest in the history of their community or of the region in general to come down and pay us a visit, as all are welcome, including children. This is a truly fascinating and rewarding hobby, as you can constantly learn something, or discover something that has been forgotten for many years.
The members gather quarterly at present at various sites around the Island. We have found that by rotating the meetings between various locations it greatly enhances our contact with the public, and provides a chance for many members to be the one with a short ride home.
Research is encouraged and to this end the Club has published 2 books to date, the first was in 1976, titled “100 Years of Long Island Bottles”, it is on the shelves of many Long Island libraries. The second was in 1999 titled “A Historical Guide to Long Island Soda, Beer & Mineral Water Bottles & Bottling Companies 1840-1970” which also graces the shelves of many Libraries in the Nassau and Suffolk area. In addition to the Clubs efforts, several members have published books on aspects of the Hobby, from Art Deco Soda bottles from the 1920-1940 era, to Beer & Soda bottles from Brooklyn and NYC 1840-1920.
For interested groups such as Historical Societies, the Long Island Antique Bottle Association can supply knowledgeable speakers on a wide variety of subjects, such as milk and dairy bottles, whiskey flasks, beer & soda bottles, and Long Island Pottery, to highlight a few.
